A topic from Local Interest: UK, London

I took communion for the first time in 12 years yesterday and have to say (shock) I quite enjoyed it.

I finally got some time to kill whilst in London yesterday and walked down to St Paul's to have a gander at the protest camp. After having a bit of a peak (there wasnt actually that much to see) i left and wondered down to the Strand.

I never normally notice the Church of St Mary le Strand slap bang in the middle of the road, which is odd as though I have a pretty strong aversion to religion I am quite fond of their pretty buildings. Anyway curiosity got the better me and I thought I'd check it out. I went inside and sat on a pew looking at the inside of what is actually really beautiful little church. No soon had sat down then the deacon pressed a hymn book into my hand and asked if I'd like to take part in the service. He had the beard of an orthodox priest and kindly glint in his eye. I didnt have the heart to tell him to shove off. He was pretty woofy really.

Anyway, what followed next was a very high Anglican rite, bells, swinging silver frankincense burners, chanting, organ.. the works. by the end I'd really got into the spirit of it, its just a shame the only other people there were an elderly couple and one very, very ill looking old man. Afterwards I sat and had a cup of tea and a chat with them, they seemed ever so slightly bemused by me, but were very friendly.

I left feeling strangely refreshed (was it the holy ghost?) and was tinged with a slight melancholy. I think many of London's smaller old churches are well worth a visit while they're still in regular use. Much like many old pubs they dont look like they're going to be around forever.
