photoIt lies not in our power to love or hate, For will in us is over-rul'd by fate. When two are stript long ere the course begin, We wish that one should lose, the other win; The reason no man knows; let it suffice, What we behold is censur'd by our eyes. Where both deliberate, the love is slight: Who ever lov'd, that lov'd not at first sight.

I am still quite new to living in South London, despite being a London resident for 20 years now. Crystal Palace is very close to where I live in West Dulwich, but I never go there. I have got the handle of pretentious East Dulwich (with their agressive yummy mummies high-tailing it to the newest fair trade, organic coffee bar), and various other localities. So I went up this afternoon to do a reccie and a bit of food shopping.

I used to work at the transmitter tower occasionally around 1990 and the densely packed triangle of streets and its approaches were quite run down, despite having the most sublime views anywhere over London, you would expect it to be a very sought after location. Despite all of that it always seemed to have a claustrophobic atmosphere. It was here after all that Angela Carter set her disturbuting novel The Magic Toy Shop. Perhaps because of this I avoided the area since moving here.

Anyway on taking a walk around I discovered there must have been 20 restuarants, lots of nice looking pubs bars and cafe's, plus several rough and ready antique shops, it looked quite nice close up. The Victorians obviously had high hopes for the area and its grand views judging by the some of the large villas which are now split up in the flats in that ubiquitos London way.

There was one nice looking bar/restaurant Los Toreros, which had a rainbow flag stuck on the window and was advertising a drag act by Dave Lynn for sometime in July (I did not know there were any gay bars in Crystal Palace - does anyone know anything about this?)

So what do people thing of Crystal Palace? Is it a nice place to live? what property has the best views, what are the restaurants/bars like? I think I will make more trips up the hill in the future.

I lived in the area for 11 years from 1986 to 1997 so must have seen it at its "run-down" time! But it was always pleasant enough, even then.

The good things, as you say, are the marvellous views, and the cosy atmosphere around the Triangle, but I think the selection of shops etc was a bit more down to earth in those days.

I think there are two reasons it's not more sought after.

First, aside from the restaurant selection, the local shopping facilities are not that great for everyday stuff, and there's not much work available locally - no large employers anyway.

Second it's not that convenient for public transport. There isn't a station really near the centre of Crystal Palace, and those stations nearby are all on slow lines - when I lived there there were only 2 trains per hour into London from Sydenham Hill, for example, which was my nearest.
