Because I'm stupid, when I first got my iPod, I didn't change the Importing format in my iTunes Preferences to MP3, and so it's been importing songs as M4A files all this time, some 2,500 songs. I've now started downloading songs from Bearshare, and of course they are MP3 files, but someone told me that it's better to have my songs in my iTunes library as MP3 files anyway because you can do more with them in that format. So, I've changed the Importing format in iTunes to MP3, so everything new that I import (save for protected files) will be in MP3 format, but of course the 2,500 or so songs that I've already imported remain in the library in M4A format.

Is my only option with these songs, if I want everything to be uniform, to go through each song one by one right clicking to convert it to MP3 and then delete the M4A files? Or should I just leave my library as is as M4A files, just converting them to MP3 files if and when I need to, and just have the new files as MP3s? Does it matter if there's a mixture of file formats in iTunes?

Any advice would be very gratefully received. Thanks in advance guys.

Leave them as AAC (M4A) files - its a better compression algorithm than MP3 anyway.

What else do you need to do with them? As long as you use iTunes then you'll be able to play them....
