Backing up digital music

I realise the time has come for me to look at backing up another set of my digital music.

I'm generally quite good at back ups. I keep an external hard drive with a copy of my music in folders that relate to the CDs (or more recently DVDs) that I've burned the copy on to, so effectively I've got the original and two copies plus the music is on my iPod. Plus I always feel slightly more organised as I don't let iTunes do the organising for me (I tend to burn and rip iTunes tracks back into MP3 format to keep things simple)

I've never had to use the Cds/DVDs to get the music back and with hard drives seemingly getting more and more reliable I'm wondering whether it's just a waste of time and money to keep burning them onto optical media as well.

What does everyone else do?

I bought myself a portable external hard drive. It was about £50 and holds 120Gb.

Every so often I transfer all my new files to it just in case my hard drive dies.

All my music is in iTunes, and I sync that all to my iPod, so I effectively have a backup that way.
