Were you still alive Mother dear
You would be seventy-seven this coming Saturday
Instead it will be twenty-seven years this October since you've been gone
Cruelly taken from me in the prime of both our lives.

At times it only seems like yesterday
Since I was told the awful news that you had slipped away
And yet, at other times, it seems like an eternity
Since I last saw you Mother and held your hand.

I was a week away from turning fourteen when you died
And yet I miss you still
No-one or nothing can take your place
Two or three have come perilously close but have stopped short of succeeding.

In the intervening years I've laughed and cried
And lost count of how often I've said and been told
That 'time heals' but I question if it does
As I miss your counsel and affection as I too grow old.

I know Mother dear you have been with me
In spirit, if not in the flesh, over the past twenty-seven years
Yet a large part of me left this world
When you left it for the safer shores of Glory.

I've missed not being able to see your face or hear your voice
And involve you in my plans
Sharing with you all the joys and pains
In, and of, an ever-changing world.

I know how you died even if I cannot begin to understand
Why, if God is good, He took you from me
And left a vacuum in my life
A hole which will never be filled.

I think of you now Mother on learning the awful news
That the daughter-in-law you never knew is stricken with cancer
And wonder if her children, my brother's children, your grandchildren
Will, like me, be prematurely deprived of a loving Mum in the prime of their lives.

I sit alone Mother and talk aloud to you
Knowing you are there, listening, even if you cannot reply
Wishing you were here to cradle me in my arms
As I lament too letting go of Mr Right.

Tell me Mother dear when you get to the other side of the rainbow
Do you too see the bigger picture
Which God either has painted, or is painting,
Or is it hidden as much from you as it is from me?

I long to join you Mother
In the happier life to come
This life is short and yet, at times, it seems so long
Without a sense of purpose to keep me here.

I do not know what the future holds for me Mother
But of this I can be sure
Each hour that passes draws me nearer to you
And finding again that which twenty-seven years ago this coming October I lost.

I love you Mother dear, and I always will.

It's nice to see you can tackle such versatile subject matter.

Christina Aguilera, Mama does it for me on this subject, here are the lyrics, I just love it

She was so young with such innocent eyes
She always dreamt of a fairytale life
And all the things that your money can't buy
She thought that he was a wonderful guy
Then suddenly, things seemed to change
It was the moment she took on his name
He took his anger out on her face
She kept all of her pain locked away

Oh mother, we're stronger
From all of the tears you have shed
Oh mother, don't look back
Cause he'll never hurt us again

So mother, I thank you
For all that you've done and still do
You got me, I got you
Together we always pull through
We always pull through
We always pull through
Oh mother, oh mother, oh mother

It was the day that he turned on his kids
That she knew she just had to leave him
So many voices inside of her head
Saying over and over and over,
"You deserve much more than this."

She was so sick of believing the lies and trying to hide
Covering the cuts and bruises (cuts and bruises)
So tired of defending her life, she could have died
Fighting for the lives of her children

Oh mother, we're stronger
From all of the tears you have shed (all of the tears you have shed)
Oh mother, don't look back
Cause he'll never hurt us again (he'll never hurt us again)

So mother, I thank you (thank you)
For all that you've done and still do (still do)
You got me, I got you, (yeah you got me and I got you)
Together we always pull through.
We always pull through
We always pull through
Oh mother, oh mother, oh mother

All of your life you have spent
Burying hurt and regret
But mama, he'll never touch us again

For everytime he tried to break you down
Just remember who's still around
It's over, and we're stronger
And we'll never have to go back again

Oh mother, we're stronger
From all of the tears you have shed
Oh mother, don't look back (oh mother don't look back again)
Cause he'll never hurt us again (cause he'll never hurt us again)

So mother, I thank you (and I thank you for everything you've done)
For all that you've done and still do (together we always move on)
You got me, I got you, (you got me, I got you)
Together we always pull through (always pull through)
We always pull through
We always pull through

I love you mom
