According to the BBC, "radical cleric Abu Qatada has been variously described as a 'truly dangerous individual' and a 'key UK figure' in al-Qaeda related terror activity." He's also been described as Osama Bin Laden's 'right-hand man in Europe'.

Today he has won his appeal to remain in the UK.

Charged with various terrorism offences in his country of origin and nationality, Jordan, and considered a terrorist/security threat by the Government here, it seems there's not a lot that can be done to remove him.

He's previously successfully fought against his deportation back to Jordan on the basis he may be "mistreated". That was overcome with a Memorandum of Understanding between the Governments here and there saying the chap wouldn't be "mistreated" when he went back to Jordan.. but now he's won another appeal based on the fact that any *future* trials which may find him guilty of offences may include evidence obtained using the torture of other people.

Now, I don't condone the torture of people for gaining evidence, whether it happens in Jordan or by the US Government in places beyond their apparent jurisdiction, but that seems a bit of a red herring here and more of a legal loophole than anything else.

I know the guy's got Human Rights and the various European Conventions say that we can't send threats to our national security back to their homeland if they may then be found guilty of atrocities against other humans, but hey, I do have a bit of a problem with this one. It smells a bit like the old "hook" story.
