photoThe best or worst half of a couple (me53/partner 37), depending on your perspective. Looking for friends only, for socialising at home or out, for coffee, a meal, cinema or just a stroll along the proml. Been here almost 3 years and still short on friends that aren't only interested in going to the pubs/club. Good friends are amongst the most important things in life.

Like many homeowners, no doubt, I have spent most of my life complaining about dodgy builders, overpricing plumbers, shoddy electricians and unprofessional tradesmen (and women) in general. Yesterday, I experienced a rare exception to what had seemingly become the norm.

Two nights ago we suffered a leaking roof (actually at 3am, which I wasn't best pleased about, since it resulted in getting hardly any sleep that night). It had been raining incessently for days. The leak came through our bedroom ceiling and, though we managed to deal with the water - with the help of a bucket - we knew we would have to get a roofer in asap to identify and sort the problem out.

We called a local roofer, which we got from the government backed Trust website. He came down within 2hrs and then spent an hour on the roof. He suggested the problem was probably a faulty valley gutter, which had become filled with debris and weeds potentially over many years. He removed the debris (a bucket full), then set about installing some lead flashing to extend the existing valley.

Completing the work, he said what he had done should work, assuming the fault was the debris in the valley gutter. But if it continued to leak when it next rained, there might be a rip in the lead valley gutter itself. At least this way we would know what was at fault, one way or the other.

He also took a digital camera up on the roof with him, then took pictures of the state of the roof before he did any work, and then again after he had finished. What a good idea this was, because it meant (without going onto the roof ourselves) we could see exactly the before and after condition of the roof by viewing the lcd screen of his camera.

So anyway, when he finished, I said 'so what are we owing you?' To which he replied, 'oh nothing, it wasn't a big job and I didn't want to leave you stranded with a leaking roof. Just call me if it leaks again and we can take it from there.'

I was completely stunned. At least an hour's work - and he didn't want anything for doing it.

In the end, I offered him a tenner just so he could have a drink on us. It seemed the least I could do, given that I was expecting him to ask for somewhere around £30 - £50.

The point is ... if you live anywhere in or around Blackpool and need a roofer, let me know and I'll happily pass on this guy's details. It just seems so rare these days to find a tradesman who is professional, curteous and prompt - and it's enough for me to recommend him to others on here and elsewhere.
