"What we're saying is that, in these areas, anyone attending primary health care the offer of the test should be made - for example when the patient registers with the GP for the first time."

"The trouble with so many people being unaware of their infection is that onward transmission is more likely, and late diagnosis is associated with more serious HIV disease.

"Without earlier diagnosis we will not see the reduction in transmission that we need to see, nor a further fall in serious disease.

"Increased HIV testing under the new guidelines should lead to much earlier HIV diagnosis for those that are infected."

He added the guidelines would help to normalise testing and remove the "stigma".

I it removes the stigma of the test I think this would be a good thing

Ugh. I don't like injections or anyone removing bits of my blood.

We went (my partner and myself) for a full screening a couple of months back, we didnt have to go and we didnt have the need to go, the decision came about after a light discussion concerning our respective ex's and their lifestyles, so we 'went' for it. The results were as we hoped and expected, including the HIV test and in effect it drew a line across the past. So in lots of ways i agree

In theory it does sound like a good idea, however look at the flip side.

There is evidence to suggest that some people don't want to know their HIV status as they feel they won't be able to cope with the answer if this answer is HIV+, do they then have a choice to opt out or deny themselves medical treatment?
