photoI hate these sections – but here goes! Tall, fit, reasonable looks (but will let you judge), solvent, own home and bicycle (!) single gay guy living in the UK's only island City. I try and get to the gym 4-5 times a week, enjoying life on life's terms and all the challenges that can bring on a daily basis. I don't bite (too often), so feel free to drop me a line.

Following on from the bone marrow thread for overcoming HIV, this article has appeared on the BBC web site today:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7716449.stm

Cells have been successfully engineered in the laboratory to overcome one of HIV's most effective defence mechanisms, say researchers.

The immune system cells, created by UK and US scientists, can lock on to HIV, even after it has mutated to throw them off the scent.

It is hoped the Nature Medicine study could lead to a more effective way of tackling HIV infection.

Tests on people with advanced HIV may start next year.

The article goes on to say:
In laboratory studies, the modified T-cells were able to destroy HIV cells in a laboratory cell culture.

If successful, surely less hit and miss than finding suitable bone marrow doners for the millions who are living with the virus?

Fingers crossed!

"One limitation however is that the immunological assassins generated by this technology are done using a specific part of the receptor of the active cells.

"The genetic make up of these receptors do vary with different racial populations." "

Hopefully they'll figure out ways to overcome that limitation.

This sounds like a great advance in the way we will be able to help cure or eradicate HIV/Aids. The wonders of research continue to amaze me.
