Hi Everyone,

Let me apologize for those who have seen this post before. I'm trying to post at different times to catch different people in the forum feeds.

I'm a PhD student and OUT member looking for men and women interested in sharing stories prior to 1967 for a project on the gay marketplace. It's particularly important to include the voices and experiences of real people into this project, and I hope to find men and women interested in taking part. I'm based in London, but can do some travelling within the UK to reach people who are interested. (I'll be in York from 19-22 Nov for those in that neck of the woods, and I'd love to hear from people in the north.)

This project investigates understandings and experiences of homosexuals as consumers prior to 1967 when homosexual acts were decriminalized in Britain. I am also interested in how businesspeople and marketers identified and sought out gay men and lesbians as consumers at this time.

I am particularly interested in talking to men and women about books, magazines, theatre, shops and shopping in this period. Men and women who worked in shops, marketing, theatre or publishing are also particularly welcome to participate.

If you are interested in sharing your memories and experiences in an interview or if you have any questions about this project, please feel free to contact me!

All best,
Justin

This sounds really interesting - will your thesis be published anywhere?

I plan to finish the degree in 2009, and then ultimately the plan is for the book to come out with either a UK or US university press within a few years of that. Fingers crossed. But yeah, I have every intention of getting this project published with a good academic press.

Have you contacted the gay press about your search for people to interview?

I think that's strategy number two if OUT doesn't pan out. So far I've had some mild interest on here, but no interviews yet. I've heard the Pink News is probably a good one to contact, but being a foreigner here myself, I'm open to suggestions (or any ideas from people working in the gay press).

I wasn't aware of either of these. Thank you both so much! I'll be posting very soon there as well.

Try Brighton OurStory, the local gay history group down here, and also email the Pink Paper - I'm sure they'll give it a mention if they have space.

Definitely running the idea past them too. And their own records promise to be fantastically helpful. Thanks.
