HI fellow OUTers, I was finally diagnosed with an underactive thyroid a couple of weeks ago after having the symptoms, (tiredness, lethargy, weight gain etc) for a couple of years and started on medication.

I'm prescribed Thyroxine pills, have been taking them for about a week now and don't feel any different yet and still sleeping for up to 12 hours a day sometimes.

I was told by the GP to take 25 mcg for 2 weeks, then 50 mcg for a further 2 weeks, then go for a blood test and increase the dose to 100 mcg for 2 weeks, go for another blood test and go and see him for the results of both blood tests a week later and carry on with the 100 mcg.

I'm assuming the blood tests are to check the level of the thyroxine hormone to see if it's in the normal range etc.

It all sounded a bit compliated so I've wrote it all on a calendar and already booked the appointments for the 2 blood tests soeverything is easier until I get on the 100 mcg thyroxine.

So, my question is, are any of you guys on Thyroxine, what dosage are you on, is the blood test thing and the slow increase in dosage common and how do you feel after being on the medication for a while?

Also, are there any side effects and how about weight loss over a period of time?

I've also been prescribed Xenical (Orlistat) to asist with weight loss, have been on a meat free, healthier eating plan for a couple of months. My thyroid levels were quite low, hence the symptoms were bad and the weight gain was 2 stone over about 18 months. I've lost 7 pounds in the last 2 weeks.

I'm not worried about the Thyroxine meds, just curious (and excited!) to see if they work and how well, and how others have responded to them.

Thanks in advance for anyone who replies.

Thyroxine usually works well and withinin a month. It depends a bit on how your levels were in the first place.

Wishing you luck...............xxxx
