I've had problems at the back of my mouth for some time. Today I saw a consultant, my third visit to the RUH in 36 hours, and he said that one possible explantion is that I'm growing an extra tooth. I already have the full complement of 32, so I wondered how. Apparently it's something that happens to some people but it may have to be excised. |

Ha ha ha! These are a type of supernumerary (extra) tooth called distomolars, and they're not really that rare, with an incidence of 2% - 3% if I remember my oral medicine correctly. Someone can Google this and prove me wrong. They're usually tiny little things that form behind your wisdom teeth at the back. They don't often come through, and rarely cause trouble. They're caused by extra little buds of tooth germs (the tissues that form your teeth when you're growing) splitting off from the main ones. Have they taken an x-ray to confirm the presence or otherwise of an extra cute little tooth? |
