Yesterday, I tripped over a kerb in Bristol. I must have been walking quite fast because I flew into the road, landing on my right hand and right knee. Fortunately there was no traffic and I got up immediately.

The hand stung for a few minutes but was otherwise OK. No scratches or bruises on it.

The knee really hurt but I could walk OK, so I assume that the injury is minor. When, some hours later, I took off my jeans I found a large graze and/or friction burn. Today the graze has been sore and a bit oozing, the way grazes often are. There's a sizeable bruise and it is significantly swollen. I can still walk OK and walking doesn't make the pain worse.

How should I deal with this graze? Should I dress it or leave it open? Should I put any ointment or other medication on it? Am I right to assume that the swelling is just related to the bruise and nothing worse?

I know this sounds crazy but it's about 20 years since I last did a similar injury.

I've got some Savlon but I haven't got a plaster large enough. It's about 4"x3" in size.

Have you cleaned it with water and TCP? That's the first thing to do. After that, it probably needs some protection to allow a scab to form, so I would protect it with some melolin or a plaster depending on how big and/or bloody it is.

Welcome to the Roadside Trippers Club - you are our third member :)

If the swelling isn't inhibiting your mobility, it should be fine. Keep it elevated, cooled with an icepack (though may be a bit late for that) and rested (light exertion is fine and recommended time to time).

Keep the graze clean and dry - antiseptics aren't a bad idea.

Might suggest bandaging to keep the knee compressed and the wound covered, but doesn't sound essential.

If it gets more painful, weepy or inhibits mobilty, see a doctor or go to a walk-in centre.

Thank you for visiting noodle's Surgery, get well soon :)
