photoJust your average geordie bloke in London, who works way too hard but tries to find time for good mates, beery nights out, indie and electro clubs/bands, good food, and cuddles under the duvet on a sunday morning. Applications welcome :-)

Bloody hell. Went to Popstarz in its new home, Sin, for the first time last night, and had one of the worst nights I've ever had in a club.

Despite getting there at peak time, about midnight, there was no queue, which was good, but a bit surprising. The queue at The Scala would have been round the block at that time. Still, we got in straight away, so far so good.

Then we hit the cloak room queue, which was not too long, but took an AGE to go down. Everyone was getting a bit fractious as there seemed to be 3 guys working in the cloakroom, but none of them were actually doing anything. I thought a fight would break out. 2 of my mates decided to try the other cloakroom in the basement, but it was just as bad.

So eventually, after about at least half an hour, we got in. Good god, it was soooo different. I remember when Popstarz was an indie club. Now it has a big 'Rave Room' playing standard hard dance, a large 'Pop Lounge' playing trashy pop, and the 'Indie Ballroom' sounded quite grand but was just stuck in a bloody corridor with a tiny dancefloor. It seemed like the music was not as good as I remember, but that could be due to the opening of some genuinely great new gay rock and indie nights since I was last at Popstarz. The 'indie' nature of NuPopstarz is definitely being played down now. But I wouldn't have minded so much if they still played the same 'cool pop' that they used to play in the Rubbish Room' at the Scala. But even that was really dumbed down, to attract the kids from G.A.Y. across the road.

And what were the security guards on??? They were herding people about like concentration camp guards. Any time I stopped to stand in one place for more than 5 seconds I got told to move on. I was waiting for a mate who was in the loo, and was told that the corridor was not for standing in, even though there was nobody else there, and it was quite wide. Then later I sat on a sofa near the basement coat check, and was told "those are not for sitting on". I wonder what they ARE for?

Apart from that, the place is a bit of a dump, and the crowd is nowhere near as cute as Rebel Rebel. On the plus side, the drinks were relatively cheap, but it was 8 quid to get in.

Shame really. I had just had a fantastic night out. Goldfrapp at the Festival Hall (thanks to quickfind:nik25 who blagged the tickets), followed by Retro Bar and meeting mates at the Welly. Pity Popstarz was such a letdown. I won't let it ruin my night again.

quoting > "The queue at The Scala would have been round the block at that time."

The last few times I'd been to The Scala the queue (in fact the whole club) was far from crowded. I think Popstarz doing badly was behind the move and relaunch.

It's a shame it doesn't seem to have worked.

Has anyone gone to the new gay night at The Scala on Fridays?
