Calling Parents By Their Name

Not quite the right forum, but hey.

I had a debate with a workmate this afternoon having overheard a conversation with his Mum, where he called her by her first name.

I asked why he didn't call her "Mum", and he responded somewhat abruptly telling me, "Well that's her name, so that's what I'm going to call her."

It transpires, not surprisingly to me, that many others have asked him the same question.

To cut the quasi-argument short, I told him I know someone else who does it and find it fascinating but also somewhat disrespectful. On further discussion I didn't quite know why I felt the latter but we were both quite passionate about the subject!

He also said his Mum sometimes picks him up on it, but - and to quote, "It's her name name so that's what I'm going to call her, everyone can get over it."

After my quip about what a display of respect that was for his mother, we stopped.

Do any of you call parents by their first name? I just couldn't imagine doing it myself. My Mum is a very close friend to me but she's my Mum. My Dad is my Dad. Both hold unique places in my life - it makes sense to me.

I imagine the relationship you have with your parents affect this perception.

(To put this into context, this workmate and I know each other very well and arguments such as this are a regular occurance so we can say such things to each other quite openly in case it looks like I was being outright rude!)
