David Kato, a prominent Ugandan gay activist, was murdered in Uganda on 26th January 2011. It was always questioned – and rejected by police – whether or not this murder was directly anti gay motivated. I would put the chance of it being so at 80% plus, but I don't know 100%

One year later, his murderer has been sentenced to 30 years in jail.

this may be a small ‘consolation' for those ‘on the front' in Uganda. What it does show to me – somehow – is the fact that the Ugandan judiciary – against all odds – is remarkably independent from the political regime of the time. Something we have witnessed on many occasions in the past. And something which is ‘unusual' in a country governed like Uganda over the last 40 years.

It gives me hope.

I sometimes wonder whether people realise how events in seemingly distant places have relevance for us in so-called 'liberal democracies'.

With gloval migration a fact, these toxic attitudes are only a flight away from our complacent, 'not really into politics' selves. In metropolitan areas we may live cheek by jowl with one another, but we do so in a stratified manner, and homophobic beliefs fester until they spring forth as hatred or violence, and we are somehow puzzled how it could happen.

The hate in Uganda, or Jamaica, or Russia, is not isolated, and while it may be distant it must be challenged as a very real direct threat to all LGBT folk.
