Car Sticker Incites Hatred In Australia

An Australian gun lobbyist has been told he is entitled to express his homophobic views, but that he went too far with the bumper sticker:

"Gay Rights? Under God's law the only rights gays have is the right to die."

Queensland's Anti-Discrimination Tribunal found Ron Owen guilty of inciting hatred with the bumper sticker when he parked his car outside in the town of Gympie, north of Brisbane.

The former president of the National Firearm Owners of Australia was taken to a tribunal, following complaints by several local lesbians.

The group claimed they had been offended despite only one having seen the bumper sticker.

Two of the women were awarded $5000 Australian dollars, with a third awarded $2500 in damages. The women say the money is likely to be donated to local charities, such as the Queensland Association for Healthy Communities, which helps those living with HIV and AIDS.

Mr Owen was also ordered to publish a written apology for inciting hatred and causing offence to the gay community of Gympie.

Tribunal member Darryl Rangiah acknowledged Mr Owen's right to free speech, but said he had
"gone too far" with the bumper sticker and subsequent comments made during a television interview.

"Ron Owen is entitled to be a homophobe and he is entitled to publicly express his homophobic views," he said.

"That much is required in a society that values freedom of thought and expression. However there are limits."

"The ordinary member of the public would, in my opinion, understand that he or she was being urged to hate and to have serious contempt for homosexuals," Mr Rangiah added.
