A topic from Gay Interest: Issues

It has been my choice for a long time that I am only open about my sexuality to people that really matter in my life ie family and friends. I chose not to be open at work. I don't work in the same town that I live.

It has been brought to my attention today, however, that a colleague that lives in the same town as me has has been going round the office telling people that I am gay. I have no idea how she knows but the town I live in is relatively small and she has probably heard it on the town grapevinee.

To be honest I am absolutely furious that my private life has become a subject for office gossip, particularly as it is my choice not to reveal I am gay to work colleagues. I work for the Civil Service which has a very strong diversity policy and I have strong grounds to take disciplinary proceedings. I can't help feeling that this will only be a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

I really don't know which way to go. Has anyone else been in the same position and how did you deal with it?

I think quickfind:tips went through a similar situation I'd ask him.

I can understand why you're so mad. It's certainly wrong and I for one would support your right not to be "outed", but I'm surprised it's grounds for disciplinary proceedings against her unless she's been doing it in a homophobic way. At the end of the day if it's true then it's not even slander.
