"CNN has suspended one of its political analysts for sending tweets during the Super Bowl that sparked a homophobia outcry. Roland Martin tweeted: "If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him."

He also tweeted that a New England Patriot wearing pink "needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass". Mr Martin apologised for his tweets and CNN called his remarks "regrettable". "I'm disheartened that my words would embolden prejudice," Mr Martin said in a statement on his website.

He added that he was "truly sorry" to anyone who felt his tweets during last Sunday's sporting event were homophobic or advocated violence. CNN said that Mr Martin would not appear on air "for the time being". "Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated," CNN added. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation praised the news organisation for taking "a strong stand" on the issue. The group had earlier said that Mr Martin's tweets advocated violence against gay people."

It's interesting that CNN seems to have taken a harsher line over this than the BBC does when some twit over here talks about things being "gay".

On the few occasions I've watched CNN I've considered them to be a reputable news organisation. This seems to back up that belief.

A joke is a joke, but its no excuse for advocating violence against an extremely vulnerable minority.
