The soil in my garden is a rather heavy clay (which is a right pain but there we go).

Seems the Mare's Tail grows very well in this soil (as well as others), it's growing in most parts of the garden.
Particularly annoying is where it is growing in my heather beds - the heathers look lovely but get spoiled by the Mare's Tails growing through and poking out the top.
I pluck them out at ground level every few days, but I was wondering if anyone knows of any other way of ridding myself of this weed?
Given it is growing in amongst other plants (heather beds and rose beds are the two main areas affected), I need to be very careful with any weedkiller (can be more liberal on the patio and paths etc).

Any suggestions?

I can't really dig it out - aside from the fact this means destroying my established beds, the clay soil is so incredibly hard to dig this is not an option - took a week solid digging to dig out a 6 foot x 1 foot flower bed a couple of years ago!.

(I can certainly see why this bugger has survived 60 million years, it's good at its job!)

Ta in advance...

try a systemic spray...or put the weedkiller on a paper tissue and wipe the leaves of the offending plants..repeat every few days till they have gone

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you have a very long struggle ahead of you!

Its outer fibres are too tough for weedkillers to penetrate properly, so that won't really work.

You can try digging it up. But the roots go very deep...as deep as the water-table in your soil. Any bit of root left...which could be 10 feet down or more....will produce more shoots.

All you can do is keep cutting it back to ground level, or digging as deep as possible, continually depriving it of any above-ground stems which can photosynthesize. Very, very slowly that can weaken the rootstock. But you might have to carry on cutting it back every day for...ooooh, maybe a thousand years might do it (by which time it'll have invaded your garden again from over the fence).

It would be much, much easier to dig up the roses and heathers, and plant ferns and cycads instead, and go for the Jurassic look!
