A Storm in a Tea-Cup ?

Pupils may face tea and coffee ban

Schools could be told to stop selling tea to pupils younger than 16 under options being considered by education chiefs.

Hot coffee and tea have "minimal" nutritional benefits and pose potential health and safety risks for young children, the School Food Trust suggested.

Teachers are being asked for their views on whether the beverages should be restricted to adults under proposed new guidelines.

The Government-funded Trust insisted it would not be banning "the British cuppa".

The draft guidelines formed part of the Government's drive to improve the quality of food served in schools after TV chef Jamie Oliver's campaign three years ago.

The general principal should be that any drinks served in schools in addition to water "should offer clear nutritional benefit", the Trust said.

A public consultation on a new voluntary code of practice for drinks in schools said allowing hot tea, coffee and low calorie hot chocolate were "obvious inconsistencies".

The consultation suggested that "further restrictions could be considered" on the drinks permitted under the new code, such as whether tea and coffee should be restricted to those 16 and over.

In a separate statement, the Trust said fears that tea and coffee would be banned from schools represented "a storm in a tea cup".

"The 'British cuppa' is an institution and whilst we work hard to ensure young people a varied and balanced diet, we have never directly or indirectly suggested that the code should ban tea or coffee from schools - neither will be suggesting so," the Trust said.
