"There has been a surge in gay marriage applications in Spain this week due to fears the union could be scrapped following the conservatives' victory in last weekend's elections.

The centre-right People's Party (PP), lead by incoming prime minister Mariano Rajoy, won last Sunday's election, replacing the Socialist Party whose leader José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero legalised same-sex marriage in 2005. At the time, the PP appealed against the legislation in the Constitutional Court, sparking concern and uncertainty from gay rights groups over the future of the union.

Jose Antonio Rodriguez the mayor of Jun, in Andalusia, says the election result has caused a significant increase in interest of his 'express-marriage' service for gay couples wishing to marry quickly.

'They're afraid of what the PP will do,' Rodriguez told the BBC.

'Before the election debate on TV, about 60 couples had contacted me. Now I reply to about 100 enquiries a day.'"

What's to stop him (assuming he's that way inclined) from retroactively doing away with gay unions? They did it in California, or tried to, or did it then were stopped from doing it, or something (I can't keep track of what goes on in the World's Greatest Democracy).

So their "fears the union could be scrapped" could be quite real. But then, what's the point in getting one if they're going to scrap it anyway?

I don't believe they ever were going to do it in California as that would be legislatitively difficult (with all that retroactive laws stuff). In fact, I don't think anyone of these nutters have suggested it, but I doubt there's anything to stop them in Spain.
