My parents never drunk much themselves, apart from a very occasional glass of wine, and my mum used to sometimes have a Babycham or even a Snowball. Dad had the very occasional pint, but never drank at home other than the wine, and maybe a ginger wine.

So, my brother and I were brought up in a largely alcohol free house. Nevertheless, our parents did allow us a glass of wine if they had one, and I can remember, from quite an early age, being allowed to drink a shandy if we stopped at a pub whilst we were out for the day, or an evening walk (we never had a car when I was very young). When we visited my grandparents for Sunday lunch I can remember really enjoying a very weak port and lemon. When we were in our teens I can remember drinking pints of cider when we holidayed in the west country.

Maybe because I was brought up to drink sensibly and respect alcohol I've never felt the need to go out and get blinding drunk for the sake of it (although I hasten to add that end result has happened on numerous occasions!).

When you were younger, how much did your parents allow or even encourage you to drink? Has it affected how you drink as you got older?

Both of my parents were quite vivacious social drinkers.

We weren't allowed a drop, although we did do cabinet raids every so often when they were out.

I work for a wine company now and barely touch booze ever.
