A topic from Food & Drink: Allergies

I assume that it's an allergy to something found universally in all Indian cooking, whether mild or spicy. However, I have no idea what. The only Indian food that I seem able to eat without ill effect is dairy, kulfi and raita primarily. I'm usually fine with Turkish and Lebanese cuisines, the two that seem most like Indian that I like. I'm also fine with Chinese and Vietnamese but they aren't much like Indian.

Does anyone have any idea what might cause the problem? Could it be a spice or herb? What would be the easiest way to find out?

The simplest thing would be never to eat Indian food again. However, it's so popular that it's quite hard to avoid. People often suggest a curry on a night out.

I can have just about any Indian food except for kulfi, lassi and raita! It's sooo not fair, mango lassi is delicious with a good hot curry.

It could be any number of things, though I'm no expert by a long way.

Indian food is generally often high in certain fats and oils - things like clarified butter are used a lot, as our herbs such as coriander, cumin and paprika. Chinese food tends to contain slightly more "aromatic" spices, that are perhaps more gentle on the digestive system.

I think most people have "the runs" for want of a better phrase; following a night of curry. But then, it really does depend on the sensitivity of our stomaches, and what our bodies are extracting from the food we eat. What goes in, has to come out; albeit sometimes in the form of energy, such as calories, and sometimes in..well, other forms!

You get used to it after a while, or at least i did, 95% of the food we eat in this house is highly spiced asian cooking, mainly curries, and they dont seem to affect me any more

Are most people masochistic? I can't stand diarrhoea. It's as bad as constant vomiting. I hate the somewhat intense pain in my abdomen.
