Just blowing a trumpet for the Sidmouth Festival. It's been going since 1955, was started by the English Folk Dance & Song Society, and by 1965 was already a world music festival long before anyone thought of the term, and when the general public's interest in popular music was rather uniform, and didn't encompass anything outside the UK other than American rock and pop.

The advent of World Music at first spawned a crowd interested in anything traditional provided that it wasn't English. There has always been the suspicion that being interested in English traditions isn't being multicultural. However, it was English folkies at Sidmouth who were the first to bring the traditions of the world to a festival, and traditional English Dance shared the same stage with dance teams from around the world.

It had got very big by the 50th festival in 2004, and Steve Heap, by then the sole "owner" of the festival, decided it was too much of a financial risk, so it's now run by a committee, and rather smaller. The big stage where the dance displays happened is no longer affordable, nor are the air fares from Africa, but overseas traditions are still featured where possible.
