Okay, so I've got a Media Degree but that hasn't helped me get any closer to answering two questions:

1) Why is there less choice, even though there are more television channels (something my Dad predicted would happen when Channel 4 was first launched)?

And...

2) Why, when there is anything on worth watching, do many other channels put interesting programmes on at the same time?

For example: May 20th at 9pm
BBC2 - War Time Diets.
BBC3 - Eurovision, the Semi Final.
BBC4 - What Happened Next? Documentaries.
ITV1 - Concluding part of Dutchess in Hull.

I watched ITV1 beecause I'd watched Part 1 the previous night but would happily have watched all of the other programmes if, that is, I had the ability of recording them all.

Yet, when a major event is broadcast - Live 8, FA Cup Final, HRH Queen Elizabeth's 80th Birthday concert, BBC Children in Need or the Big Brother Finale - there's absolutely nothing worth watching other than tired films or repeats of shows no one bothered to watch the first time around.

If it really was all to do with 'ratings', then surely it would be better to stagger good programming so that every Channel received a more noticable rate of viewers?

Your thoughts please.

the answer is simple ... 'Free Market'

each channel is in competition with the others, especially for prime-time viewing
