This is a single option poll: "The government is proposing 71 Freeview local television transmitters. There are options regarding transmission power that greatly affect how many people may receive the service. Using one mode transmission, 64 QAM, about 16 million households should be able to receive the service. Using another mode, QPSK, this rises to 21 million households, about 80%. This page has individual maps showing 64QAM coverage and a national map showing QPSK coverage. The trade-off between the two modes is that with 64QAM you can transmit 7 or 8 standard definition channels, while QPSK will only allow 2, possibly 3. However, I think that few areas can economically sustain more than 2 local channels and that going for a number of near-national channels defeats the point of the proposed licences. Also, 64QAM largely misses many major population centres, such as Cambridge and Hull, which would be covered by QPSK. Which mode should be adopted?"

  • 64QAM - more channels with fewer viewers are better: 0 votes
  • QPSK - fewer channels with more viewers are better: 5 votes
  • 16QAM - a compromise between numbers of viewers and numbers of channels, not yet investigated: 0 votes
  • 64QAM from some transmitters and QPSK from others, depending on individual circumstances: 0 votes
  • Don't bother with local television.: 4 votes
  • Don't care: 9 votes
  • Don't know: 1 vote
  • Other: 1 vote
