A topic from Literature: General Fiction

I finished reading On the Beach by Neil Shute tonight and i welled up as i came to the last few pages as it was one of the most emotionally intense books i've ever read.

The basic story goes along the lines that there's a nuclear war in the Northern Hemisphere which wipes out the entire population of those countries and the fallout starts to spread south. The book focuses on a few couples living near Melbourne and their preparations of the inevitable. It also follows the fortunes of Dwight Towers the Captain of one of the US's last two remaining nuclear submarines and how his life becomes entangled with those people in Melbourne.

The book was written in 1957, so some might consider the language used in it a little wooden, but i must admit loved the style and found it an absorbing read on a subject that must've been quite in the forefront of peoples minds as the cold war started to kick in. The haunting events and way Shute drew all the threads together towards the close of the book just pulled you as if you were there and i was sitting thinking what would i have done in their shoes. I was close to tears in the end just comprehending the enormity of it all............ wow i'm knackered. Seriously need a glass of wine after that.

So what books have done that to you? The only one that came close was Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks.
