According to Midlands Zone there are plans afoot for an unofficial parade through Birmingham City Centre between 1 and 3pm before on Saturday 24th May before Pride officially kicks off

So is anyone on OUT interested in holding our own unofficial parade?

Pride March - PRIDE IS A PROTEST

We believe "Birmingham Pride" to be the most important event of The Brum LGBT calendar. Pinnacle to this celebration of diversity is, we believe, the Pride Parade.

Pride is a protest. We face social inequality and discrimination on a daily basis and we have not achieved the aims of the Queer Liberation Movement of the sixties which was so fabulously recreated in last year's parade. We feel that Birmingham Pride will be incomplete without its Parade, the jewel in the crown of this brilliant weekend. Without a parade, Pride forgets its purpose, not only this, but it is also confined solely to the gay village: out of sight and sound of the heterosexual world.

We, like so many others, are unaware of the complete reasons for the cancellation of the parade, however we have seized the opportunity to arrange a slightly different event in the form of a simple march taking the aims of pride back to its grassroots. This pride march is possible through the use of the 'Human Rights Act of 1998' stating a person's right to peaceful protest. The parade needs no budget and this way needs no permission from the council.

ALL WELCOME

PRIDE PARADE "PRIDE IS A PROTEST"
SATURDAY 24TH MAY
2PM VICTORIA SQUARE

Back to our grass roots, re-politicising Pride and show that there are still steps to be taken.

Come and make our voice heard (and seen)

Bring placards and invite everyone you know!

Let's show that LGBT people aren't apathetic. The forms have been filled in and the police have had notice, so we have the legal go-ahead. Now we just need to get out there and show people that we do care. Pride's going to be a great weekend, but lets make it even better by actually informing people of how far we still have to go...

BANNER AND PLACARD PAINTING

We now have the AB+ Warehouse for banner painting and placard making and anything else you desire on Wednesday.

We shall provide banner material, black and white paint, wood, etc for making the banners and placards, however we will be asking people to make a small contribution of their choice for the cost of these supplies. Please bring paint brushes and anything else you might want.

If you already have banners and publicity from your group please feel free to use those.

Those of you that can't make it to banner painting we will be making some extra ones for those that turn up on the day.

6PM - 9PM
WEDNESDAY 21st MAY
AB+ Warehouse
Lower Essex Street (parallel to hurst street)
Gay Village
