John Maybury will direct a brand new adaptation of Emily Brönte's classic gothic romance ''Wuthering Heights'. Joining him on the project are Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae of Ecosse Films..who will producing the project, which HanWay Films will sell internationally.

Olivia Hetreed (who was the scribe behind The Girl With a Pearl Earring) penned the script, and casting is already under way to shoot this autumn.

Wuthering Heights', published in 1847, is a tempestuous love story about obsessive passion across the class divide, set on the Yorkshire Moors. The story has spawned film and TV adaptations more than a dozen times, most famously in 1939 with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon. A 1992 version starred Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche...which has been my favourite adaptation to date.

Maybury is now completing The Edge of Love...which stars Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Cillian Murphy in the romantic drama about Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Maybury previously directed The Jacket and Love Is the Devil.

Ecosse and HanWay have collaborated on two other literary period pics before...namely is Brideshead Revisited (due for release this year, and last year's Becoming Jane both directed by Julian Jarrold.

Well, what a difference 2 years make eh? Since quickfind:237303 was started..the project was dropped, and then there were reports that movie bosses couldn't find a director to ressurect the idea. But now it seems that the wheels are well and truly in motion now, although most likely without Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie!

And now....Natalie Portman will star as Catherine Earnshaw in the new adaptation.

Tim Haslam (from HanWay Films - the distribution company behind the project) said:

"Natalie is without a doubt one of the most acclaimed actresses of her generation. Combined with visionary director John Maybury, this promises to be a fresh, exciting version of a classic love story."
