No-one likes a copycat..and Simon Pegg doesn't mince his words when describing his disgust at the thought of a US version of the hit comedy Spaced. His main gripe is with the production companies behind the project...who have exploited his original idea.

The Hot Fuzz star, who co-wrote the show with Jessica Stevenson, acted in the original version of Spaced...which aired from 1999 to 2001.

But now Granada, Wonderland and Warner Brothers have made a pilot for U.S. audiences, using his well-known name to promote the new series.

And Pegg, who signed away his rights to the series when it began in 1999, is infuriated the new American show is being sold on his credentials - even though he has nothing to do with the remake.

He says:

"My main problem with the notion of a Spaced remake is the sheer lack of respect that Granada, Wonderland, Warner Bros have displayed in respectively selling out and appropriating our ideas without even letting us know.

"The fact is, when we signed our contracts ten years ago, we had neither the experience nor the kudos to demand control. We signed away our rights because we just wanted to get the show made.

"As a result, we have no rights. The show does not belong to us and, those that do own it have no obligation to include us in any future plans.

"You would perhaps hope though, out of basic professional respect and courtesy, we might have been consulted. It is this flagrant snub and effective vote of no confidence in the very people that created the show, that has caused such affront at our end."

He is right...in the sense that he did sell his rights to the series. All this is very well hindsight :S
