Guillermo Del Toro has secured Sir Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis for his Hobbit project, according to LOTR gossip site..TheOneRing.net..

McKellen will return as Gandalf, whilst Serkis slips back into the precious role of Gollum.

Visionary director Del Toro tells the site:

"I had the most charming meeting with Sir Ian, and all bureaucracy pending, he's on board, as is Andy Serkis.
We will continue giving you progress reports as they occur. It is our intention that we will not lose any of the key elements."

In a long interview with the site (which you can read in its entirety here - http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2008/04/25/28747-guillermo-del-toro-chats-with-torn-about-the-hobbit-films/#more-28747), Del Toro also touched upon what the "second" film would be about:

"This second film is not a 'tag on', it's not 'filler', it's an integral part of telling the story of those 50 years of history lost in the narrative. There will be certain things that we will see from the first movie but from a different point of view, but it will feel like a volume, in the 5 volumes of the entire story. It will not feel like a bridge, I've been hearing it called 'a bridge film', it's not, it's an integral chapter of the story, and I think we're all on the same page."

So..the debate over whether McKellan will reprise his Gandalf role can be put to sleep.. Or can it?

Recently at the UK premiere of Speed Racer...Sir Ian McKellen confirmed what Del Toro had said:

"Yes, it's true. I spoke to Guillermo in the very room that Peter Jackson offered me the part and he confirmed that I would be reprising the role. Obviously, it's not a part that you turn down, I loved playing Gandalf.

"Guillermo will be getting around to starting the script in about six weeks when he's finished filming Hellboy II."

Rumours are going round suggesting 3 possible actors to replace Ian Holm as Bilbo Baggins.

* James McAvoy
* Daniel Radcliffe

and

* Jack Black

Del Toro said in an interview recently:

"I can tell you it's down to a few names that we all agree upon. For our first choice, completely magically we all have the same name."

Glad to hear that most of the actors are reprising their roles - I do like consistency!

I'm not sure how timings will work out for Daniel Radcliffe though - would Harry Potter have finished filming before they start on The Hobbit now that they have split the last book into two films. James McAvoy would be ideal. As for Jack Black - I can't really see it myself.

Andy Serkis is fit

Rumours are suggesting that he's the front-runner for the role...but we'll see.
