Remember when stories went around the world....suggesting the end of all man-kind in the year 2000? Well...according to an ancient Mayan calendar...the world is supposed to end on Dec 21, 2012. But what will happen? The Mayan people believed that a global cataclysm (of some sort) would occur, and there are many people out there who are beginning to suspect that there might be some truth to this prophecy. And who better than disaster-movie director Roland Emmerich to bring this story to life!

So far..John Cusack has signed on to topline Emmerich's apocalyptic thriller (titled 2012), and Redbelt star Chiwetel Ejiofor also is in talks to join the big-budget epic.

This story kicks off with a global cataclysm, which brings an end to the world as we know it, and chronicles the heroic struggle of the survivors. Another Day after Tomorrow anyone?

Emmerich and Harald Kloser penned the screenplay, which Sony bought in February.

Shooting will begin in July in Los Angeles, barring a Screen Actors Guild strike.

I personally had never heard of this prophecy...until today. But I was amazed at the number of internet articles and blogs that I found on this subject...most of which believe that this is likely to happen. But is this another Nostradamus-type story, or is it a case of wait and see? I must admit..I don't really believe events such as these can be predicted. But at the same time I can respect the fact that people back then did believe it, and that some around the world today still do.

I never bought the Mayan apocalypse 2012 story.

I just thought the Spanish killed them all before they could start calculating what happened after 2012.

I've read a lot of Graham Hancock who's examined this and I think if memory serves it's just where their calander ended, it didn't mean the world would end. The Maya have had a few calendars over their reign. Although apparently (again if I remember correctly) their last ruler knew a disaster would strike his people, which some people beleive this co-incided with the Spanish occupation and slaughter of the Maya.

Nothing to worry about for us though.

It wasn't right though, was it? I mean, the Mayans gave us chocolate and we gave them syphillis.

Yes...there's that reason too.
