Region-free BluRay players?

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - martini in one hand - burger in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "Whooooooo what a ride!"

Following on from quickfind: 337725 and quickfind:336996 which sugest that HDDVD is likely to be the loser in the HD wars and that BluRay is likely to emerge as the standard, I've got a question.

Most of us are familiar with the restrictive region coding on existing DVDs (the thing which means that you can't play US DVDs on a UK DVD player unless you manage to have your DVD player unlocked), which enables the studios to restrict sales and to rip us off over here.

One of the advantages of HDDVD is that it does not have region coding - discs from anywhere will play anywhere, meaning the consumer can buy a disc for half the price in the US and happily play it here.

BluRay, however, DOES have region coding (what else did we expect from Sony, after all?).

So my question is this - does anyone know if true region-free BluRay players are around or whether it is possible to fully region-unlock a BluRay player?
And if so, are the studios going to be able to block such players from working with future updates?
