I went to see this play last night which is about the wartime bombing of Coventry. It is really very good. Particularly realistic special effects at one point set off all of the alarms and forced the theatre to be evacuated; but this felt genuinely like 'audience participation' in the most spontaneous sense.

The play raises the contentious idea, that Churchill knew Coventry was going to be bombed but let it happen so as not to tip off the Nazis that the brits could read their codes and to provoke the Americans into joining the war.

The play really did make me think about how terrifying it must have been for neighbours and family who survived the Blitz. It's well worth going to see.

I recall once talking with a guy who was a dentist and in WWII did fire-watching duties. He was at a high point about 10 miles SE of Crewe on the Cheshire/Staffs border. He recalled seeing from there the flames of Coventry under attack.

quoting > "The play raises the contentious idea, that Churchill knew Coventry was going to be bombed but let it happen so as not to tip off the Nazis that the brits could read their codes"

It sounds a brutal suggestion, but it's very plausible. As soon as the German military command had any evidence that a code had been broken, they would change it and work would have to start over again to crack the new code - and that could take months, with Allied shipping, ground forces and civilians sufferring heavy losses all the time. Enigma by Robert Harris gives a bit of insight into the pressure and difficult decisions surrounding the work of the code breakers at Bletchley Park.

But I agree, from reviews I've seen the play should be worth a visit.

Just found a reference to the idea that Churchill failed to stop the raid on Coventry - it suggests that this story has been going around a long time, though I had not heard it before: http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/38/a3142838.shtml

I find that rather sad. Wordsworth described Coventry as the finest Medieval city in England. Admittedly, if suffered with the Industrial Revolution; but whereas we remember the tragedy of the destruction of beautiful cities like Dresden; it is sad that we don't remember the destruction of our own heritage. Apart from the fact that over 1000 people died.
