photoThe best or worst half of a couple (me53/partner 37), depending on your perspective. Looking for friends only, for socialising at home or out, for coffee, a meal, cinema or just a stroll along the proml. Been here almost 3 years and still short on friends that aren't only interested in going to the pubs/club. Good friends are amongst the most important things in life.

Got some dreadful news yesterday, when we took our 12yr old beautiful lurcher, BB, to the vet. She's been losing weight over the last month and has not eating very well. They took blood for tests and telephoned later to say she has kidney failure, with only about 25% of her kidneys still working. She is in danger of fitting and/or having a heart attack as the toxins are building up inside her body. The vet advised euthanasia, sooner rather than later, to prevent her suffering in the coming weeks. There is no treatment, though I would gladly sell everything I had to pay for anything that would help her.

BB has been my best friend and soulmate through extraordinarily difficult times, she has been at my side every day this last 12yrs and I love her with all my heart. I can't imagine my life without her. I haven't stopped crying since we got the news. My ex-partner (who I was with when we got BB from a rescue centre) is coming over Sunday to see her one last time and to say goodbye. My current partner and I are planning to get the vet to come to our home a week Monday, so she can pass away in familiar surroundings. At the moment, every minute is a bonus, but the days ahead fill me with fear, dread and utter despair.

Is there really no treatment? My mother and I looked after my uncle's dog at the end of its life. It had had kidney failure, but was treated with steroids which kept the organs active for another year or so after the diagnosis.
