I have an English springer spaniel that's about six months old. In most respects he's well trained: he sits, stays, lies down and comes on command every time without fail (well, unless there's a really big distraction, which is fair enough...), and he's almost completely stopped jumping up.

But lead training is one area that I just can't seem to get right. I began by following Eric Letendre's tips that I found on his Youtube site, and it worked for a while. I thought he was all lead trained and started to allow the kids to take him out for walks. But (I should've known!) the kids have spoilt him and pretty much undone all the hard work, and he's now pulling again.

I've tried to reaffirm his previous training, but he no longer seems to respond to the same method. I've tried this one here http://a1dog.com/walking-nicely-on-lead.htm
for the past 3 weeks and haven't been getting anywhere. Thing is, he just starts pulling and I speed up to try to keep the lead slack, and he takes that as a signal to run faster - and he runs a lot faster than I can, so I'm then obliged to pull back, which defeats the object.

There are videos on the net showing different methods, but they all use already-trained dogs in the demonstrations, none of them that I can find begin with the untrained dog and go through the stages of the process. It's not very encouraging to see someone strutting around a field with a perfectly trained dog, and going "so that's how you do it", when I want to know how they GOT them to do it!

Anyone got any tips that don't involve relying on haltis and suchlike? I want him to just walk properly on his lead without pulling. Because the kids walk him, they have been known to lose leads, so I don't want to invest in expensive specialist anti-pulling harnesses and stuff that they'll just lose and I'll have to buy again. If I can get a good method that works, I intend this time to teach it to the kids as well to make sure they don't undermine my efforts but support them instead.

I really want to get this licked, cos at 6 months he's already weighing 20kg, which isn't far off the average adult weight for his breed, so he's going to be a whopper and I don't want to have to deal with his pulling when he reaches full size!
