photoHold on to your hats, the profile's been updated again. What can I say to ensnare the bewildered into my thrilling domain? Not much really. Just kick off your shoes, have a look round, have a prod at the exhibits and tidy up before leaving. If you like arid-dry wit and conversation drop me a line. If you don't, don't.

As we appear to have gone a whole day without a new Who topic of conversation I thought I'd start this one:

New Who is quite rightly a thunderous success, especially when compared to the Dark Times of the mid to late '80s, but why? Do the producers care more nowadays? Are the stories better written? Are they attracting a better calibre of actor? Could 'Curse of Fenric' be made nowadays? Or are new and old Who equally comparable and it's just the modern day hype and marketing that has tipped the balance?

As this topic has gone days without a reply, I'll be charitable and contribute.

I think part of where new Who scores over old is in the fuller characterisation (even beloved characters like Sarah Jane were always frustratingly thin in terms of what we actually knew about them), and the sense of the show now being a continuing story rather than a series of discrete adventures, as it always felt in the past. Each series, we feel we're on a journey with the Doctor and his friends. There's also the excitement of each series building up to a grand finale, which we never really had before, and the excitement of picking up clues to what's going to happen in the future along the way. In a way I think this makes the show considerably more sophisticated than it used to be.
