Why is it that some people who like Doctor Who seem obsessed with the idea that it's going to be axed? They get panicky if the next series hasn't been announced two weeks into the brand new one. They study the ratings of every single episode and seem to think that if they're not through the roof every week the BBC's going to pull the plug. Ratings on the night aren't even that important any more. People can watch a repeat later on, record the episode either by old fashioned means or using Sky+ or something like that, or even watch it on iplayer whenever they choose. The BBC sells Doctor Who all round the world, and it has a loyal following in many countries, including the USA. It seems to be the most ruthlessly and successfully marketed of all the BBC's programmes - the array of merchandise that's come from it's mind-boggling. But for some reason people still seem to think that if an episode or two don't pull in huge figures, or if Russell T. Davies decided to leave, or various other things, none of that would matter at all as the BBC would suddenly decide that was it, Doctor Who was over. |
