For those of you interested, the Tom Baker years are showing on UKTVDrama at 5pm every night. They've just started with The Robot. Set those generic PVRs now!

I'm looking forward to Daleks and Cybermen later on this month. Not together obviously, that would just be silly!

Yes..I enjoyed the classic Dr Who series tonight also.

Did you know that the Robot story was loosely based on the King Kong film.

Sarah Jane as Fay Wray......

Alas, you will be waiting a while for any Daleks, Genesis of the Daleks isn't scheduled for TX in January

There has been quite a debate on the Restoration Team's forum about the 'filmising' of the look of the video, as well...

Bugger! But it's out on DVD isn't it?

Are they showing "Revenge of the Cybermen"? I always thing Revenge gets a real bad press - I mean it's far from "Doctor Who" at its best, but I reckon it's not that bad either

allthisandlessThu 03/01/08 20:44

it is, and the DVD of Robot looks much nicer than the UKtv Drama TX of it...

Genesis Of the Daleks, BBCDVD1813 (p) 2|Disappoint, I mean Entertain... A two disc set released in 2006.

quoting > "Are they showing "Revenge of the Cybermen"?"

according to the link I posted earlier it's on Wed 16th, Thu 17th, Fri 18th and Mon 21st.

Part of it's bum deal might be due to having been the very first BBC Video, way back in 1983 (originally available in Betamax, Video2000, Laserdisc, Baird televisor disc and VHS from all good stores) and for a fan of a certain age it was many of their first experience of owning Classic Who. And for oh so long it was almost the only Classic Who to own...

Revenge is due out on DVD this year.
I like Revenge, was the first time i ever saw the Cybermen.

Do you think the reason they're not showing Genesis is Dalek clearance problems, presumably with Terry Nation's Estate?

That could be the case, as when UKGOLD use to show classic WHO Dalek stories were missed out..however it wasn't always the case.

I like Revenge too, Ian. I know the Cyber Leader gets all rattled by the Doctor and he's supposed to be emotion-less, but I found those sequences quite amusing. Plus the episode 1 cliff-hanger with Sarah-Jane being attacked by the Cybermat is one of my all time favourite cliff-hangers

allthisandlessThu 03/01/08 20:55

It's apparently the reason UK Gold skipped them for years...

2|Disappoint haven't yet announced any date for Revenge of the Cybermen... The only titles confirmed so far this year are the Beneath the Surface boxed set (Silurians, Sea Devils and Warriors of the Deep), The Time Meddler and The Five Doctors, the rest is hypothosis until 2|disappoint see fit to let us in on their big secrets...

The BBFC website gives good clues with material being cleared for release, but it won't generally tell you when a title is going to be released, only that it's been presented for certification...

batterseaguyThu 03/01/08 21:00

Well BBFC classification costs an extortionate amount, so I doubt that 2 Entertain would be spending the money classifying them unless they were lining them up for imminent release. Maybe 2 Entertain seek separate clearances for the DAlek stuff that they put out? TV and Video are two very separate media after all

allthisandlessThu 03/01/08 21:02

material for the recently released Planet of Evil, I'm led to believe, received BBFC clearance around 12-18 months ago...

batterseaguyThu 03/01/08 21:07

photo

Did it? Oh well, I got that wrong then. Soz!

allthisandlessThu 03/01/08 21:10

I've no idea of how much it costs, and my friend (an ex-outer) who trawls the BBFC website much more than I ever have isn't about (or isn't answering his gaydar messages...) to give me dates and deeper detail on BBFC listings and DW DVD's... They did release Planet of Evil... Eventually...

batterseaguyThu 03/01/08 21:19

Well, to get a feature film classified cost well in excess of £1,000 over 10 years ago, so I shudder to think what it must cost now. As I recall, the cost depends at least in part upon the running time of the submitted material and of course if you don't get the classification you wanted and you cut and re-submit, which I imagine wouldn't happen much if at all with Doctor Who, then that all adds to the bill. It's an expensive procedure, but I imagine the rates are cheaper for video than they are for film, because a preview theatre doesn't need to be booked, etc.

allthisandlessThu 03/01/08 21:22

..also the vast majority of the episodes already have been certified on VHS... Only a few have been restored substantially differently from VHS or recovered and released straight to DVD.

batterseaguyThu 03/01/08 21:24

photo

That's true, so it probably is only the extras that need classifying!

ian1968Thu 03/01/08 22:55

Example, they started putting the extras of Planet of Evil together around June 2006, but didn't tell us sit was coming out until over year later!
