My workmate and I decided to try somewhere different for lunch and stumbled upon a traditional-looking French café.

I've always known her opinion of the French has never been too high owing to their ... 'wanting' hospitality. I thought this might be a good opportunity to change her mind.

Hell was I wrong!

We had to ask the waitress at the bar if we just go and sit down or order at the bar once we're ready. It was table service as I expected only if we'd just gone in and sat down I don't think she would have noticed us enter as the table we chose was concealed from were she was.

Ten minutes in and I decided to go up and ask again if we should order at the table or the bar.

"The table, of course!"

Ooo...kaaay.

She rushes off and we're still waiting another five minutes before she asks the order.

Next question, which cheeses does the Assiette des Fromages come with?

"I don't know"

Does it come with anything like bread, celery etc?

"Some bread"

OK, what about the mixed platter, can the foie gras be swapped for something else?

*blank*

(With the best French I could muster) Est-ce que c'est possible qu'en lieu du foie gras, peut-etre de confiture ou de salade?

Now she just seems uncomfortable.

"Uhh... no, it's not possible."

OK, then just the salad for her, croque monsieur for me.

After the order, a separate waiter breezes past. I collar him and ask which cheeses specifically does the platter comes with.

"Plenty of cheeses." *waltzes off*

Right then.

At this point my workmate was actually only taking a few marks off her evaluation of this place, only to find her salad came with (strong) mustard vinegarette. It wasn't listed and she *hates* mustard.

Ah well, I'll have to look for other potential company for weekends in Paris.
