"Obesity is more likely to be caused by genetics and not eating and exercise habits, according to new research.
The British study found children's body mass index and waist size were 77% due to the genes they had inherited.
A much smaller proportion - just 23% - of their weight was due to the environment in which they were growing up.

Professor Jane Wardle, of the research team, said: "This study shows that it is wrong to place all the blame for a child's excessive weight gain on the parents. "It is more likely to be due to the child's genetic susceptibility."
Researchers at Cancer Research UK's Health Behaviour Centre studied 5,000 pairs of twins. By comparing the weights of identical twins, who share all their genes, and non-identical twins, who only share half their genes, they were able to identify the role of genetics. The scientists stress that children who inherit the genes will not inevitably become overweight. But their genetic endowment gives them a stronger predisposition to obesity.
"In today's environment, which provides unprecedented opportunities for all children to over-eat and be sedentary, it is not surprising that these tendencies result in weight gain," said Professor Wardle.
Sara Hiom, from Cancer Research UK, said children who inherit the genes will have to be sure they have an active lifestyle and eat a healthy diet.
"Parents of children who show early weight gain may need additional support," she said. "We must try to counter these inherited tendencies by providing the healthiest possible environment."
Obesity is a major factor in ill health and significantly increases cancer risk in later life."

I don't really think that the fat gene can be blamed for the problem we have with Obesity.
There are many courses for being obese, all of which can be cured. I have been obese for a long time myself but doing something about it today in order to loose weight, which is already happening. I have made many excuses about my weight which made me not do anything about it in the past, and the fat gene is just giving another excuse to people to give to get a healthy life style.
Instead of giving people that are suffering from obesity just another excuse to be overweight and obese give them the treatment they really need and make healthy food and a healthy lifestyle less expensive so that everyone actually can afford it.
