photoIt lies not in our power to love or hate, For will in us is over-rul'd by fate. When two are stript long ere the course begin, We wish that one should lose, the other win; The reason no man knows; let it suffice, What we behold is censur'd by our eyes. Where both deliberate, the love is slight: Who ever lov'd, that lov'd not at first sight.

From my office widow, from my desk, I can see just up Gray's Inn Road at the next junction, police and the firebrigade who are out in numbers at the scene of a road accident. There is a blue tarpaulin drapped across the side of a flatbed truck where i think a cyclist had gone under the wheels. There is no hurry it seems, I am guessing the cyclist is dead. Though I think I missed the actual incident by a few minutes.

I am 95% certain it was a cyclist because the truck was turning left into a tight corner, and a pedestrian would have been able to simply walk out of the way. It appears the 'cyclist' was caught on the blind left side of the truck at the junction. The truck then turns left and traps the 'cyclist' (who was in a cycle lane, there is no cycle box at the head of the junction for the cyclist to occupy). This is a nasty little junction.

This has happened to me a couple of times where I had waiting at the front at a junction, a bus or truck pulls up just to my right - I intend to cycle straight on, the truck or bus wants to turn left. Lights go green and suddenly I am forced to leap off the bike and hoic my bike onto the pavement.

When I have found myself in this situation (which I avoid, but sometimes it just happens) the alarm bells ring in my head and I will often jump traffic lights in order to put myself out of danger (and many other cyclists do to) and I make no apologies for it.

I cycled to work today - it was lovely and sunny, but there were a lot of inexperienced cyclists on the road, who I thought should not be there.

Now when I look up over my monitor - I cannot help but see the police cars, fire engine and that Blue Tarpaulin which is now extended across the pavement, I feel quite queezy as I think it could have been me. Cyclist or not - Poor sod.

:(

I passed that scene on my way to the office too, coming from the Kings X direction.

They managed to cover up what ever was underneath the truck :/

The whole road is closed to any sort of traffic and pedestrians now.
