I'm possibly the only person on OUT who'll be at all excited about this, but this weekend BBC4 is devoting some of its programme to cheap, cheerful and often thoroughly obscure British movies. Centrepiece is the documentary Truly, Madly, Cheaply written and presented by Matthew Sweet (author of the wonderful Shepperton Babylon, which is showing on Saturday and again on Sunday and Monday. The mouthwatering roster of films are: The Last Journey (1930s drama about a crazed train driver), Lazybones (1930s comedy directed by Michael Powell), Psychomania (ace 70s horror with Beryl Reid, George Sanders and zombie bikers) all on Saturday; The Black Rider (50s horror), and Cover Girl Killer (Harry H. Corbett as a murdering pervert in big glasses) on Sunday, and Marilyn (wonderfully tawdry sounding 50s crime drama) on Monday. |
