Friend owes me money - where do I stand??

Simple yet complicated. Easy going but uptight. Smiley but serious. Friendly but aloof. I'm just a walking contradiction really but if you can put up with that I'm sure we'll get along fine.

I have the feeling that there is not a lot I can do about this but if anyone has any advice they can give me it would be gratefully received. And apologies in advance for the length of the post!

About 5 years ago I was in a situation where I was co-renting a two bedroomed flat and the other person wanted to move out. A friend of mine of 10 years standing wanted to move to Brighton so asked if he could take the spare room which I agreed to. We lived together for nearly a year but unfortunately for the majority of that time my friend was unemployed or in a low paid job. All the bills were in my name and things got out of control pretty quickly with him owing me about £4,000. I couldn't carry on like that so we both moved out, he took out a loan and paid off roughly half of his debt and we went our separate ways.

Shortly afterwards he declared himself bankrupt, this was discharged about a year later and although we were still in touch it was intermittent and his responses to paying anything back were evasive. Over the past year or so I haven't heard anything at all from him.

So, legally if I wanted to try and get something back do I have a leg to stand on? Is there a statute of limitations for this type of thing? Or should I just write it off as a bad judgement call?
