Apart from the occasional fried egg buttie, I have never cooked anything from scratch. I live on take away food and microwaveable ready meals. I really have no idea how to cook anything, or for that matter, how to buy ingredients.

I need to save money. I'm told that my food bill will shrink if I start cooking my own food. I went to Waterstones to find a book on the subject and came away in shock. Most of what these books were telling me was complete double dutch. They were like reading some kind of NASA manual, though I did come to the conclusion that Jamie Oliver is a prat.

Can anybody recommend me a cook book that is very simple, aimed at simple people like me, and explains the easiest things that most others seem to take for granted, tells you how to do things, like how long do you boil vegatables etc and shows how to cook straight forward meals?
