I have a decent Dell Precision Desktop about just over 2 years old, good amount of memory, processor (Intel Pentium D) etc etc

Just of late, say the past month or so, I've noticed that the desktop is going a lot slower than it used to especially in running the internet i.e. opening new pages and connecting when it used to go quite fast (I'm using broadband and have good speed on the router) also when running or opening other programmes it connect's slower than usual.

I've sorted through my documents and programmes and have deleted any un-necessary programmes and files. I'm about to de-frag the computer but I was wondering if anyone else may recommend doing anything else or suggest to try doing something different.

Cheers

are you running Windows XP?

I would suggest clearing out your Temporary Internet Files (empty cache in browser, delete browser history etc). I presume you keep up to date with virus/malware protection?

After 2 years I would encourage a complete reinstall of Windows if you can handle the hassle - cleans and speeds things up a treat usually (though you'll be surprised just how much you've added to the system over time...well usually)

Defrag always speeds it up.

Also run msconfig.exe (start > run) and stop unessesary programs from starting when you turn on. The only programs you really need are the windows ones and maybe firewall/antivirus programs.

http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/index.html will give you instructions.

Or, for about £25 (or pirate download) you can get Tune-Up Utilities 2008 which will clean up and optimise the system and do the above things. It's great! You can find it at: http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/

...a22b.... had the same problem with my PC (also a Dell) and had my IT manager here over the weekend.

One of the things I was surprised about is that the normal defrag thing told me I would not need to defragment, but a new program thought otherwise. Meaning the windows assessment does not seem to be too acurate.

Sorry for not being able to give you a lot of technical details (I am computer illiterate)
