I am hitting a brick wall here. I am working on a new Vista machine, a Sony Vaio. All the stuf on it is the latest, all updates etc.

Annoyingly, movies I have which normally play well on every other machine on my network (about 7 of them, 3 are vista) are not doing so well on this. They play but in what I can only describe as 'A4' format!

I have the latest divx installed, that's working fine elsewhere. Of course, it is nigh on impossible to see which codec these files are using so I can't be definitive on what they need apart from it is more than likely divx.

They play better in windows media centre up the point that the program crashes anyway!

For the record, I do own all the movies, it was just easier to download them to watch them on a PC if I wanted to or across the network.

Sounds like the aspect ratio is wrong. This is normally adjusted in the codec settings but you don't know which codec is being used?
Try going to the properties of one of the files and viewing the full details - it should indicate which codec it was encoded with.
Normally, depending on what kind of codec packages you have installed, an icon will load in your system try upon playback so that you can adjust the settings of whichever codec is being used at the time.

It is using divx but everything looks fine in there. It also plays fine in the divx player
