I have a spreadsheet with values in columns B to P. Column A is the name of each row of values. Column Q is a numerical value that we can ignore for the purposes of this question.

Sometimes in the same row the same value might appear - eg, 1AS123 might turn up in D7500 and G7500. or 2SL100 might show up in E340 and H340. You know what I mean.

So, the question is how do i show in column R whether that row has a duplicate value?

I'm not sure that you can do it using a function, but you could highlight duplicate values using conditional formatting; To highlight unique or duplicate values, use the Conditional Formatting command in the Style group on the Home tab.

Hope this helps!

But that's only any good if there are only a handful of possible cell entries that are duplictaed. I get the impression there could be many possible cell contents that could be duplicated.

Hmm - thanks for that - but as there are 1000s of rows, it would still entail me visually checking for the rows with the formatting. having a signifier in column R would allow me to use an autofilter to just show those rows - which i have to report on separately.

I'm sure its possible - after all, am i not just looking for frequency of an value that is greater than 1?

good point, clive - i dont actually know which values will be duplicated... just that some values are!

How many possible outcomes are there?

If there aren't too many, could you not set up a new column for each one and then use one of the count functions to show the number of duplicates there are on each row for each outcome?

Sorry, didn't see you last post when I made my last one.
