A topic from Technology: Computer Hardware

I recently purchased a Lexmark all in one fax, scanner, printer, copier and got around to installing it last week when the print cartidges emptied on my old faithful HP. The only reason I had to change was because the scanning/copying bit of the HP had become very unreliable and took a lot of persistence in getting it to work.

The spec of the Lexmark seems fine, and my system (Win XP with 512Mb RAM, 40Gb or more free hard drive, and 2.4GHz processor) exceed the min hardware requirements.

Imagine my frustration, therefore, when it takes about 75-110 seconds to start printing each print job. It is just no a viable proposition when I'm trying to print things in quick succession, even just a letter and envelope is a pain, but when I'm doing a batch of envelopes, each one being a separate print job, it is impossible.

I've tried using the printer before I've done anything else after rebooting the pc, I've tried re-installing the software and I've cleared out all the redundant crap on the machine, but it has made no difference.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get this printer to respond more quickly? I'm making a big assumption, of course, that the time to print first page *should* be rather less than 75 seconds!

is the print set up, set to SPOOL the job first and then print? turning this off in properties will help

we have a lexmark 4850 all in one and whilst its not quick off the mark (7-10 secs) its not as long as yours, also disable the stupid voice that sounds like Data from star trek "printing started" as this takes time to load as well

and wait until you come to buy ink..!!!!!!!!

I wish we had never got ours..:o(

The laptop also connects to it via the wireless network and that starts printing almost immediately... the only thing is that if I get any pop-up messages (it keeps asking me to register, even though I've done that on the desktop) and after printing just a few pages it pops-up telling me I need to re-order cartridges) the printer just crashes and I have to close any Lexmark applications from Task Manager.

I think I'm taking this printer back for a refund.

Another disappointment, was that if I connected the desktop pc to the Lexmark via the USB cable, the printer wouldn't also connect to the laptop via the wireless network. To connect both, they both have to connect wirelessly.

Should I be able to connect one via USB and one wirelessly?

No its down to the USB handler in the printer, the WIFI card in the printer is connected to the printer internally via USB, the printer can only handle 1 USB device at a time and the external port takes priority, as soon as you use the external port, the green WIFI light turns orange to show its off air, its stupid, what if this printer is or needs to be connected to a desktop for example???
